History Behind the Most Famous Ghost Story of All Time!!!

Dec-13-2008

Hey all!

In the spirit of the Holidays, I thought I would post a link to an article about one of the most famous ghost stories of all time…..

Charles Dickens  “A Christmas Carol!”

In the following article, it explains not only a bit about the classic book-turned-play and film, but it explains perhaps the reason why Charles Dickens dreamt up “A Christmas Carol” in the first place…

The article explains, in detail, some of the background about the classic film, (which was a book at the start), from the ORIGINAL illustrations, to the meaning behind it, to some of the customs of the old day that modern-day readers might miss, not having been fortunate enough to live during the time of it’s original printing.

By the way, did you know that it was an old English custom to tell ghost stories on Christmas Eve? (it goes back to what I posted a link to in “the Origin of Halloween”…..apparently telling ghost stories on Christmas Eve goes with the Winter Solstice celebrations.

But, I may be getting a little off-topic.

Anyway, take a look at the article, and settle down and go back in time to 1800’s England… find out why there were so many children around to work in the factories in the first place, to why the death of “Little Tim” was so important back then, and MANY MORE little gems!!!

Wow, I was glad to run across this very interesting article, I hope you take the time to read it!  I found it interesting… I personally didn’t know all the details about the classic play and movie until I read this very intriguing article!

Kudos to whoever researched this so well!  Great job on a great article about one of the most classic ghost stories of all time!  Cheers!

Take the time to read it, if you’re a fan, you’ll love this article!  If you’re (like me) wondering what it’s all about, you’ll love the article, too!

Origin of Halloween - Where it all started!

Nov-7-2008

Hey all,

Even though I don’t celebrate Halloween personally, I know there may be a lot of confusion as to what it really means, or where it really started, or originated. I thought I would take the time to post the origin of Halloween for those that were wondering about it, like me.

To do this, I had to do some research, and this is what I found out….

Halloween, (or Hallow’s Eve) was originally started as a means to differentiate the changing seasons, but also as a means of mourning, or grief, over loss, and death.

In my research, I found a great article, and I will summarize/paraphrase it here, but I will also post it’s link at the bottom, so you can read it for yourself. The following information is re-written in my own words as a means of summary only, and was gathered from the article.

Halloween may have started with a feast given by the Celtic and Scandinavian peoples about 2000 years ago. This feast was called Samhain. This feast was celebrated around November 1st, (which is likely why Halloween is called “Hallow’s Eve” by some, as Halloween falls on October 31st, and not November 1st). This feast was basically a feast to bring in the winter season.

On this day in Irish history, tribes would gather to ward off attacks of evil spirits. There were sacrifices made, kings slaughtered, and bonfires.

Our fascination with Halloween and evil spirits, ghosts, demons, etc. May have started with this feast to welcome in the winter.

Another word for Halloween is, as many also know it as, “All Saints Day”. This was more of a Christian look at Halloween, when Christianity became the main religion of that time, which was around the time when the Romans conquered Britain.

Our look at Halloween isn’t really All Saints Day, but All Soul’s Day, the article further explains. On November 2nd, people would gather to mourn and pray for the souls of the dead, and was chosen on the day after All Saints Day so that the Saints could assist in the prayers. This was formed around 1000 AD.

On this special day, church bells were rung, food was left out, and lanterns were left burning in the windows, to welcome the lost souls, or spirits, back.

The article further states that possibly All Saints and All Souls Day was created by the Christians as a means of making holy a “pagan” holiday (Samhain), and then goes on to state some of the rituals different areas and lands had for rituals of death. Some poured milk on graves, some carved turnips on Hallow’s Eve, etc.

It was, however, a time of plenty, as well, as the harvest season was wrapping up and farmers were storing food for the winter months. It was then a ritual for people in authority to host parties, and entertain, and give food to the poor. (The article goes into more depth than I am able to summarize, but I found it interesting, nonetheless).

There is a whole section of the article that I am not able to summarize, that would be interesting to read. This is only a taste of what the article states.

The article goes on to further state how modern Halloween has it’s problems (and origins), and how Halloween was getting more and more dangerous, and then it wraps up quite nicely by saying that modern Halloween is a reflection on our values. What do YOU value? I personally don’t celebrate Halloween, but for those that do, I thought I would post a little research so that you will know WHY you celebrate it, and how it came about in the first place.

But, don’t take my word for it! There is a LOT of the article that I was not able to summarize, that you will just have to click on the link and read for yourself!

Happy reading! I know it’s a little late for Halloween, but as I came across this article, I just thought I would post it as an after-thought.

Hunting the Supernatural Realm

Oct-26-2008

Wow!  Meet (through this awesome article) a man who literally devotes his life to hunting ghosts!  This man is so in-grained to hunt the paranormal, that he has even quit his technology job four years ago to be a full-time Ghost Hunter!  Can you imagine?  That’s when you KNOW it’s more than just a hobby!  This guy is SERIOUS about hunting the paranormal!  I really enjoyed reading this article,

http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2008/10/26/moved_by_a_spirit_to_hunt_the_supernatural/

And, like all “believers in the supernatural realm”, I found the article intriguing.

So intriguing, in fact, that I even went over to this ghost hunters personal website,

http://ghostvillage.com/

and wow!   There’s a whole lot more to this supernatural ghost hunter than the news article gives him credit for!  Plus, his personal website has a couple of videos on it, as well.  I found his website even more intriguing and spooky than the article gives him credit for!

Just read the article, and  head on over to the ghost hunter’s  personal website, browse around, and see if you can’t pick up some tidbits of paranormal, ghostly, information!

P.S. the videos on his website are extremely interesting, and some are quite spooky!

Happy reading!  (I know I had enjoyed it!)

What is the best website for true ghost stories?

Oct-19-2008

I want to know where to find the best ghost stories, eye witness accounts of monster sightings, and the identificaton of creatures commonly researched in cryptozoology. Parapsycology sites are fine too.

This site is very comprehensive. I've found a lot of "true" stories there about all the things you mention, plus ghosts, timeslips, fairies, etc, and photographs. There are lots of links:

Ghost Videos and Pictures: How can I differentiate the fake stuff from the real thing?

Oct-19-2008

I see pictures and videos everywhere and a lot look convincing but when I see comments about them, they all say "Fake! I can see the string!" or something along those lines. I can't tell the difference! How will I know?

This actually is a very good question.
There is software that can do this. Mostly, is just learning how they do it, then paying attention and studying pictures or videos. Really, if you look close you can see most of what ever they use.
I have included a link at the bottom that shows how to do this with Free software.
Edit: This is a reference to "show" how to pick up the fakes so that she will know what to look for.

TOP 25 SCARIEST HAUNTED HOUSE MOVIES

Oct-16-2008

WOW!! Talk about Ghost Videos! I came across this site that lists the site owner’s opinion of the Top 25 scariest Haunted House movies of all time!

Reading the list made me remember some of the scary movies listed, and also made me want to rent or own some of the other movies it lists, as well!

Who can forget the movie “The Shining?” (which made it on the list, by the way)? The famous “Heeeere’s Johnny!” will forever be plagued upon my memory, as Jack Nicholson did an awesome portrayal of an estranged writer.

Or, who could forget “Poltergeist”, where the beautiful blond little girl gets kidnapped to “save” the Poltergeist spirit? Trust me, every time the TV set in my house turns snowy, I tell myself, “It was only a movie!” (LOL).

Or even “Ghostbusters” made the list! Who could forget the famous “Zoar” and the gatekeeper? If this movie was worth making a cartoon out of (which I remember watching) then it obviously was worth it to put it on the Top 25 Haunted House videos!

Anyway, take a look at the site, and maybe go out and rent some of these classics. Hey, I know what I’m doing in the near future! Click the link below to see a full list of the movies that made it on the scariest list.

The White House is Haunted?

Oct-11-2008

Hello everyone!

Take a look at this site I found.  I found a site that mentions that the White House in Washington, D.C is indeed haunted!

It mentions that most of the ghosts are Abraham Lincoln ghosts, but it also mentions some other pretty spooky things.  Check it out!

Here is a link to their website, complete with 5 videos of eye-witnesses that have seen the ghosts, or felt the ghosts  and/or their presence.

Check it out! Here is the link to the site with the short videos/documentaries

http://www.whitehouse.gov/ghosts/#

And here is the link to the intro-article that the National Examiner put together, as well.

http://www.examiner.com/x-983-DC-Arts–Travel-Examiner~y2008m10d10-The-White-House-is-haunted

What do you think? Pretty spooky?  I know I would have chillls up and down my spine if I ever worked there, or experienced what they did. It’s one thing to hear someone else talk about it, and totally another thing to actually EXPERIENCE it for yourself!

But, I wonder…I still think something like that would be AWESOME to experience! (but that’s just me)

Telling Ghost Stories Leading Children to the Occult?

Oct-6-2008

Hey everyone…

While browsing the Internet, (yet again :)  I came across this article, and I personally, having a three year old daughter, took it VERY serious.  This article talks about how, because Halloween is drawing near, we need to be extra careful that our children aren’t being drawn into the occult.  It talks about how children are unconsciously being drawn into the occult of “the dark side” because of peer pressure, mainly.  It mentions that children aren’t drawn in because of a desire to, mostly, but rather they’re drawn in because of peer pressure.

Anyways, I’ll let the article tell you, they can do it better!   Just click on this link, read the article, and then drop me a comment to let me know what you think of it, if you so choose.  Hope you find it interesting, just like I did.
